Cortese: California Must Stop Defunding Critical Transit and Climate Investments
SACRAMENTO, CA — California State Senator Dave Cortese (D-San José) is calling on the Legislature to stop the defunding of critical public transportation, affordable housing and clean-air programs as recent regulatory and budget changes threaten Cap-and-Invest Tier 3 investments and commitments made under SB 125.
“We cannot tell Californians to ride transit, build affordable housing and fight pollution—and then defund the very programs that make those goals possible,” said Senator Cortese. “California made a promise, and we need to keep it.”
Cortese is calling for a one-time $1.25 billion appropriation from the state’s Special Fund for Economic Uncertainties to offset CalFIRE’s GGRF commitment and preserve funding for SB 125 transit commitments and Tier 3 programs, prioritizing transit and affordable housing.
“California has more than $15 billion in its Rainy Day Fund and another $4.5 billion in reserves,” said Cortese. “If we have the resources to prepare for uncertainty, we have the resources to protect the transportation and climate investments Californians were promised.”
The proposal would also protect GGRF interest revenues for SB 125 and Tier 3 programs, establish safeguards around the Manufacturing Decarbonization Incentive, increase transparency over CARB administrative costs, and fund AB 617 community air protection programs.
“This is about keeping our word to transit riders and communities most burdened by pollution. We should not defund the investments that keep California moving forward.”
