NSWC Corona commemorates 25th anniversary of 9/11

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Corona Division hosted a morning ceremony on base commemorating the 25th anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, honoring those who lost their lives and recognizing the enduring spirit of service and resilience demonstrated by Americans in the years since.

This year’s Patriot Day ceremony marked a major quarter-century generational milestone. The anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the lives lost, honor first responders and military personnel who answered the call to serve, and reinforce the values of service and unity.

The commemoration, led by NSWC Corona Executive Officer Cmdr. James DeFazio, gave personnel a chance to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and included remarks from members of the NSWC Corona workforce.

“I knew one person who perished on 9/11: Capt. Gerald ‘Gerry’ DeConto, who was in the Pentagon when Flight 77 struck. We deployed together several years earlier as part of the USS Nimitz Battle Group. Learning of Gerry’s death at the Pentagon truly brought home the reality of the tragedy,” said Scott “Chip” Demary, force-level assessment division manager at NSWC Corona, during the ceremony. "We know that acts of evil can cause great harm — but that strength, courage, compassion, and unity are the answer. I recently heard a post-World War II hymn titled 'Let There Be Peace on Earth.' Its central theme is let there be peace and let it begin with me. We can do that here at Corona by contributing to a strong Navy.”

The ceremony concluded with DeFazio reading the president’s Patriot Day proclamation. The event brought together NSWC Corona personnel to honor those who lost their lives and recognize the enduring impact of the Sept. 11 attacks.

NSWC Corona Division has provided analysis and assessment for the Navy since 1964. With expertise in gauging the Navy’s warfighting capability, NSWC Corona is a leader in data, analytics, visualizations, digital environments, engineering, and leveraging technology to bridge and integrate the Navy's data silos – enabling informed decision-making by the warfighter. With more than 4,000 scientists, engineers, Sailors, technicians, and support staff, NSWC Corona is located in Norco, California, with two California detachments in Fallbrook and Seal Beach and personnel in 14 additional locations.
